I always heard that the label originated in Texarkana, which had a team in the Texas League. The ballpark was crossed by the state line, so that a hump-backed liner (Dizzy Dean's name for it) might fall in the same state in which the batter stood, whereas a real long-ball hit would fall in the other state. I don't know which state had the batter's box.
