leaky mode

leaky mode definition - telecom
A physical path traveled by a leaky wave in an optical waveguide, such as an optical fiber. A leaky mode has an electromagnetic field that decays monotonically (i.e., steadily) for a finite distance in the transverse direction (i.e., at a 90 degree angle to the plane or axis of the fiber), but becomes oscillatory beyond that finite distance. See also leaky wave.
