Maastricht Treaty definition - finance
A
1991 treaty, signed in Maastricht, the Netherlands, that was designed to
establish a single European currency and create economic cooperation in Western
Europe. From the treaty a cur-rency union was created that set up narrow ranges
restricting the value of each countriesÂ’ currency. The Maastricht Treaty was
replaced by the agreement to create the euro, which began to circulate Jan. 1,
2002.
