However, the batter can be credited with a hit if in the opinion of the official scorer the batter would have been safe even if the fielder had attempted to retire him (Rule 10.06(d)). Example: Runner on third. Batter's bunt is fielded by pitcher. Pitcher throws home, runner is safe at home. If in the opinion of the official scorer the batter would have beaten the throw even if the pitcher fielded and immediately threw to first, batter is credited with a base hit.
