- a disastrous end, bringing overthrow or ruin

- a total or ignominious failure
- Geol. a sudden, violent change, such as an earthquake
Etymology: L catastropha < Gr katastrophē, an overthrowing < katastrephein, to overturn < kata-, down + strephein, to turn: see strophe
