Taft-Hartley Act
Federal antiunion legislation passed by Congress in 1947 over a veto by President Harry Truman. The act prohibited closed shops and required that a majority of employees approve a union shop. The legislation prohibited unions from contributing to political campaigns and allowed companies to refuse to bargain with unions.
