  1. A customer's instructions to buy or sell securities.
  2. A directive or command from a court or governing authority.
  3. A request to purchase or sell a good or service. For example, a customer at an automobile dealership decides to place an order to buy a new Nissan 350Z.
  4. A sorting or ranking of variables.
