labor mobility

labor mobility definition - business

labor mobility

The willingness and ability of workers to move or change jobs. Mobility is hindered by numerous factors, including limited skills, friends, expenses involved in moving, school-age children, and employment commitments of a spouse.

I don't want to get stuck in my current job because I don't have any other options. What actions can I take to improve my mobility?

Being stuck in a job is a function of both occupational conditions (lack of training, experience) and personal conditions (inability to sell a house, family ties to an area, and so forth). The occupational conditions are more readily addressed. Take advantage of all company-sponsored training and development opportunities. Allocate personal resources to training and development as well. This may mean going to school at night or attending meetings or conferences at personal expense. Finally, take advantage of networking opportunities. Start with your own organization (meet people in other parts of your company), reach out to industry contacts including customers and suppliers, and also move to meet people outside your industry in organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce. Networking is also accomplished by volunteering in community organizations that provide potential employers an opportunity to see your organizational skills, your people skills, and possibly your technical competence. Just be sure that you follow through with any commitment you make to volunteer organizations.

Always have your business card handy and keep your resume up to date. Check with your company's human resources department for postings of internal openings and have in mind someone who could take your job or be trained to take it if you are transferred or promoted within the company.
