indexing

  1. A strategy for choosing securities so that a portfolio mimics the market as represented by some chosen market index. Most stock index funds attempt to mimic the S&P 500.
  2. Adjusting a variable such as wages or a contract price to a specific index. For example, Social Security payments are tied to a cost-of-living index.
